What is the difference between the 3 vapour types of e-Juice?

Discreet (30VG/70PG) – These juices are for use with the typical pen style e-cig. The atomisers have a wick system consisting of 2 or more pieces of string and are normally disposable. The liquid is thin, is easily absorbed by the wick and evaporates well when used with lower powered batteries.

Medium (50PG/50VG) – The medium juices are designed to be used in tanks which use replaceable coils. They evaporate well at low voltages and are better suited in mouth to lung devices.

Cloudchaser (70VG/30PG) – For the more experienced vaper using a much larger tank and wide mouthpiece, these liquids are made specifically to be used at a high heat for the biggest clouds in direct lung, sub-ohm devices.

Volts, Ohms, Watts… Wut?

So once you’ve decided that you enjoy vaping and would like to upgrade to something with a bit more “oomph”, suddenly a whole can of worms is opened and there’s jargon flying about all over the place! So here are the basics to give you a better understanding and to help you decide on your purchase.

Voltage/Wattage: Fixed on some batteries and variable on others, the voltage/wattage is the amount of power going into heating up your coil and in turn your e-liquid. You will find wattage below 5w on pen style batteries whether they are variable of fixed. Most people find they move on to these from the very basic disposable type e-pens which either have the string wicks and refillable e-liquid or are the cigarette lookalikes with replaceable capsules. Once you start looking into direct lung inhale mods and tanks, the wattage shoots up and the variance can go from 1w all the way up to 250w! Most coils display the best wattages to be used with them and it’s important to stick within these guidelines to avoid burning it out prematurely.

Ohms (Resistance): An easy way to tell if your kit/tank/coil is designed for a mouth to lung or direct lung style vape is by the ohms(Ω) displayed on the coil.

If it is sub-ohm (below 1.0Ω) then you are looking at a direct lung set-up. These coils are designed to be used at the highest temperatures and produce lots of flavour and giant clouds. Because of the temperatures reached if your were to vape this using the mouth to lung technique you would find your lips and mouth get very hot very quickly! Many experienced vapers find themselves upgrading to these types of devices in the end. Inhaling directly into the lungs is off-putting to some people but the ones that try it and give themselves a day to get used to it rarely go back.

If your coil is printed with a figure over 1.0Ω then you are dealing with a mouth to lung device. These mimic smoking in that you suck the vapour into your mouth before inhaling. These are best if you prefer to emulate smoking a cigarette and when used with variable batteries/mods, you will find you can really tailor your vaping, taste and throat hit to suit you.

The higher the Ω or resistance, the lower the temperature/wattage and vice versa.

Defining the jargon…

  • Volt – unit of electrical potential or motive force, potential is required to send one ampere of current through one ohm of resistance.
  • Ohm – unit of resistance, one ohm is the resistance offered to the passage of one ampere when impelled by one volt.
  • Ampere – units of current, one ampere is the current which one volt can send through a resistance of one ohm.
  • Watt – unit of electrical energy or power, one watt is the product of one ampere and one volt – one ampere of current flowing under the force of one volt gives one watt of energy.

Mouth to Lung vs Direct Lung

What do these two terms actually mean and how do they affect which liquids and e-cigs that I buy?

Put quite simply, a mouth to lung device is the closest to emulating smoking. There are two steps to inhale: 1) You suck the vapour into your mouth 2) You inhale the vapour that is being held in your mouth. With a direct lung inhale the e-cig is your mouth and you only perform step two.

Many of our e-cig product listings state which vaping style they work best with. All of our liquids have the option of Discreet, Medium (Mouth to Lung) or Cloudchaser (Direct Lung).

What about all these different …izers?

There is a fair amount of confusion surrounding vaping when it comes to describing different e-cigarettes and their parts and internal workings. So what is the difference between all the different …izers?

  • Atomizer – Otherwise known as coil or coil head, every vaping device contains an atomizer of some kind. It is the part with the heating element that turns your e-juice into vapour.
  • Clearomizer – Also known as the tank. They are available in a variety of shapes and sizes and allow you to view the liquid inside so you know when you need to refill. They are made from polycarbonate plastic and can be top filling or bottom filling and take top coils, bottom coils or multiple coils, mainly dual but there are some triples and quadruples on the market.
  • Glassomizer – Essentially these are the same as the Clearomizer although they are made from Pyrex glass. They will never erode regardless of the acidity of the liquid they contain but it is possible that they could crack when dropped or pressure is put on them in your pocket. However, the companies that produce tanks made from Pyrex will generally provide replacement glass separately so you don’t have to invest in a whole new tank should this happen.
  • Cartomizer – We don’t stock e-cigarettes with cartomizers at as they are quite outdated and don’t work so well but just to give the definition, they are mainly disposable and look like a plastic cigarette. Sometimes the end lights up and you replace the liquid with a new cartridge not by squeezing liquid into a clear tank.
